I randomly stray from shooting things in the newspaper sense because I get worried that I won't get into the business of journalism.
The portrait that you see is of my roommate. I had him quickly sit down on our couch and snapped off a couple images.
I was trying to emulate a photographer's work that I admire greatly. He was recently featured on Strobist, and you can find his site here. I highly recommend visiting that site. There are some amazing celebrity photos that most people have seen, but probably don't know who took them.
This image in general was pretty basic when it comes to lighting. I set up a shoot through umbrella pointed downward with an Vivitar 285hv flash at around 1/2 or 1/4 power providing main light.
The rear light was a Nikon SB-800 set at 1/2 power resting on the back of the couch outside of camera shot, pointed at the wall to give me a very light background.
I think it emulates Platon's work pretty accurately except for the post production work that he does. Everyone photoshop's differently.
